6/8

School is almost over! I am so flipping excited! I can't wait for summer to start. I'm more excited to go to six flags on Friday right after finals. I'm finally going to conquer my fear of the raging bull. I don't understand why I freak out so much but I do. There's also a new ride called goliath. Its a wooden coaster and it has an 85 degree drop with a bunch of loops and stuff. I'm pretty scared to try it out but I just might. Wish me luck.

6/1

This week was really really slow. I hated how slow it was. The only day out of this entire week that actually went by speedy quick was Friday. I was supposed to take a test for world that day but as luck would have it, he moved the test to Monday. I was super duper excited and very happy. I wasn’t ready for the test. Now I have the chance to study a little bit more. On Friday I also went over to my friends’ house, I have not seen her in awhile and I was so happy to be able to spend time with her. I even got to spend the night. Pretty good week I may say.

5/25

This week has been crazy. Monday was a normal day. Tuesday, there was testing. I did not go to school the following day because on Tuesday night my dad woke me up to say something was wrong with my mom. She's pregnant so any little thing can turn into something bigger. Thursday was another normal day. Then came Friday. We all went to a baseball game and on my way home my dad told me my mom had her baby. My little sister was born 2 months premature. I'm scared. I want her to be okay. So my whole weekend I'm here, worrying about my mother and sister.

ASPCA Humane Award Speech

Darivette Cruz

ASPCA HUMANE AWARD

It is a great honor and privilege to be receiving the ASPCA Humane Award. I did

have a whole speech planned out in case I did receive this glorious recognition. I was

originally going to thank and list off all the things that made it possible for me to win this

award. There are other pressing matters to be discussed though.

First off, to even be able to be a recipient of this grand award, you have to be able to

significantly change the lives of animals. I believe everyone should be awarded this because

animals are something we should all treasure and love. It is not that hard to help other living

creatures.

Right now, I am going to talk about animal cruelty. Everyone should know what this

is. It is such a disgusting thing that happens across the nation whether people realize it or not.

Animals have rights. Animals have feelings. Animals deserve to be free and to be happy.

Animal cruelty can be seen as real physical abuse but there is also emotional abuse involved.

Animals want to feel love. They want your attention. Ignoring or not showing any sort of

care or love towards an animal can be just as bad as physically it.

I found two quotes that really hit home and I feel like you people should hear them.

Listen carefully because I think it will have the same affect on you as it did on me when I

first read them. The first one is “A greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged

by the way its animals are treated.” So tell me. Are we a great nation? How are we so great

when we decide to hurt another living creature? How are we progressing when we leave an

animal locked in a car on a hot summer day? Do you all not want our nation to be viewed a

positive way?

The second quote I came across was “There is only one dangerous breed: Humans.”

That quote was the saddest quote of all. The face of a sad pitbull was just above that

quote. Let me tell you, we are dangerous. We claim that the animals are the dangerous ones

and they are just as scared of us as we are of them.

I want animal cruelty to end. I hope you all do too. Thank you for giving me this

award and thank you for sitting here quietly and listening to what I had to say. Have a great

day.

School is almost over. If only the days would go by even faster. I'm pretty excited for summer to start. The more reviews I do, the less interesting they become. I have nothing left to write about except what I did on the weekends. I didn't really do much this weekend. I did go to china town. The food was really good and it was cute little place. I also went to practice for a friends quince. But that's basically all I did.

Final Draft: The Effectiveness of Crwodsourcing

12 May 2014
The Effectiveness of Crowdsourcing in Business
‘Crowdsourcing’, first defined by Jeff Howe and Mark Robinson in the June 2006 issue of Wired Magazine (Howe), is a new, web-based business model that solves problems through a distributed network of people. Jeff Howe, a contributing editor and publisher at Wired Magazine, states: "Simply defined, crowdsourcing represents the act of a company or institution taking a function once performed by employees and outsourcing it to an undefined (and generally large) network of people in the form of an open call. This can take the form of peer-production (when the job is performed collaboratively), but is also often undertaken by sole individuals. The crucial prerequisite is the use of the open call format and the large network of potential laborers" (Jefferey). Crowdsourcing is accomplished by a number of people in putting their opinions or knowledge to help build up a business. It can also be achieved by having a single person with enough background to help out the business/company. Examples of crowdsourcing include applications such as Airbnb, Airtasker, and goCatch (Fung).
Crowdsourcing is effective in business because of the access to resources, scale, and transparency (Fung). Crowdsourcing can be like a business partner as well. These reasons will be the main topics discussed in the next few paragraphs and will highlight the key points as to why crowdsourcing is effective.
Crowdsourcing can be thought of as an innovative business partner (Boudreau). For example, the company Apple has used the world to build up their business. They used apps to enhance their technology and collect data from people all over the world. After the collection of this data, Apple is able to figure out what the customers want. Due to this newfound information, Apple applies it to the new items being brought into the world and this is what has made them a success.
Therefore, proper resources, or skills and items, allow a business to increase profit. Tim Fung, the CEO and founder of AirTasker, states that menial tasks are completed more skillfully through services such as photography, promotional staffing, office work or design. Profiles, reviews, and reputation credentials advertise these skills and items. A large, universally shared set of these resources is accessible.
Scale, or size and location, also allows a business to increase profit. An example would be specific events or promotions are completed more skillfully through a large workforce rather than individual employment. Having more than one individual will increase the speed at which information will be received and will also increase the amount of work getting done. Also, lowering costs is more flexible. Sources are redirected toward achieving business objectives.
Transparency, or real world data, allows a business to increase profit. For example, data transactions are completed more skillfully through a large volume rather than a small one. As the saying goes, two heads are better than one, which applies to crowdsourcing. Valid data will be rewarded whereas invalid data not. As “user-generated reputation” becomes more prevalent, other methods of building trust such as advertising become irrelevant.
Although effective because of the access to resources, scale and transparency, crowdsourcing may be ineffective in business because of certain obligations to support management, marketplace, and control (Fung). Yes there are upsides to crowdsourcing, but that definitely does not mean there are not some downsides that will go along with it. These are just a few of the downsides to crowdsourcing for business, also known as crowdfunding. These key points will be discussed in the next few paragraphs and will bring out the main reasons as to why crowdsourcing will not be effective for funding purposes.
Management should be efficient in cost when accessing resources, or skills and items. As Rohit Arora stated, “This method of raising money may prove inadequate for larger ventures requiring millions of dollars worth of financing.” He is basically saying that in order for crowdsourcing to benefit a project or business, it has to be a small amount of money required to be raised. For example, a big business like Pebble Watches promised the participants some products. Pebble Watches ends up losing because it cost more money for them to ship the product and no money is really gained from the people participating. It is basically a free giveaway. A company may promise participants a product in exchange for information about it but profit may decrease because of invalid information (Arora).
Tom Murphy, a partner at the law firm of McDermott and Emery, states “Crowdfunded companies will have large numbers of shareholders – likely upwards of 1,000 – to whom they and their directors and officers are accountable and owe fiduciary duties (Murphy).” Many people can take and own a part of a business funding project. That company is responsible and owes money to all those people who have taken part. If the company fails, or does not meet their target, this can anger the investors. Angry investors’ leads to the act of suing the company/business for what little money they may have earned. The investors can claim the company is a fraud or the company has breached the contract (Arora). This can be false but most likely the court will vote in favor of the investors because they can falsify evidence or take things out of context.
That scenario will usually only happen if a company fails and if the investors are enraged they are not receiving the money they thought they would have gotten by that point in time. How exactly can a company fail though? By accepting false information, that is how. To save more money, a company or business will pay the cheapest price to get valuable information. Low payment in exchange for information is often accepted by those who are not as knowledgeable about a company's work (Paul). A company or business has to be willing to pay top dollar if they want to receive top notch data. The second a person puts out false information, the reputation and the business itself will go up in flames.
Marketplace should be fair when accessing scale, or size and location. For example, a product or company may be tarnished by unsatisfied customers or investors through negative reviews (Floren). Also, websites such as Kickstarter do not guarantee the success of that certain product or company as only 10% actually succeed (“Blunder”). Websites such as Indiegogo, Fundables, and CircleUp may also profit from a business’s earnings and apply fees (MarketingMoxie). There are always hidden ways a site will be able to take part in the money flowing in for a company’s product. Whether they tell that company outright or just take the money without notification, that site will always have a percentage of the money.
Control should be qualitative when accessing transparency, or real world data. For example, Marcia Yudkin, owner of a marketing solutions website and a marketing mentor, states that participants would more or less state invalid information about a product or company (Yudkin). There is a higher chance of invalid information being passed along than valid data being received. Also, participants do not necessarily have to know anything about the product or company. Whatever comes to mind is what they will put down. Participants usually ignore the criteria given to them by the company. A participant will not take the time to learn about a product or business the way a professional consultant would (Yudkin). Invalid information about the product or company may also hurt the product or company (“Pitfalls”). Crowdsourcing is basically trusting and using a source of unknown people in order to complete the task at hand (Bradley).
Crowdsourcing, a new web-based business model that solves problems through a
distributed network of people, is used in business to increase profit. Crowdsourcing is
effective in business because of its access to resources (skills and items), scale (size and
location), and transparency (real world data). With enough skills, a person can build up
their business and make a reasonable amount of profit out of it. If they can find the right
location to collect their information from, then they are set. They have to take the time to sort
out all the real information from the false information. This part will be crucial to their
business/company because if they make a mistake, things will fall apart. A business will
collapse. Although crowdsourcing may be ineffective in business because of certain
obligations to support the cost of management, a fair marketplace, and quality control, it is
overall effective in increasing profit.

My week was pretty awesome! I really didn't do much and my homework amount was minimal. It was pretty darn fantastic. It was mothers day weekend obviously so I had to make my mom a gift. I made her a collage of all the pictures of us when we were little and I put a small poem in the middle. I went out to buy her a rose and she was so happy with her gift. It ended up raining though so we didn't get to enjoy the park. Maybe next year!

I can not believe it is already May. School will be over in a couple of weeks which makes the days seem to go by even slower. A friend of mine will be having her quince in June and I am counting down the days. We got our dresses this Friday and we all get our own style. She's big on the whole individuality thing. I love the dress she picked because it goes well on a short girl. Hopefully this upcoming week goes by quickly because I'm starting to grow tired of school. That's basically my whole week guys.

crowdsourcing

Crowdsourcing’, first defined by Jeff Howe and Mark Robinson in the June 2006 issue of Wired Magazine, is a business model that solves problems through a distributed network of people (Brabham 76). In business, crowdsourcing is utilized to increase profit through the collaboration of many people (Tarokh). Usually happening via the Internet, forms of crowdsourcing include funding or brainstorming.
Crowdsourcing is effective in business because of it’s access to resources, scale, and transparency (citation).
Although effective because of this support system, crowdsourcing may also be ineffective in business because of it’s
You can lose money trying to gain the information you need instead of increasing profits. For example, there was a company who promised participants watches if they provided them with information about the product. In the end, they didn’t even gain valid info and they wasted millions of dollars sending out products (Arora). Some people require payment for their knowledge. As an investor, you try to get the
cheapest rate possible but that can be one of the biggest mistakes you can ever make. Paying the lowest amount won’t save you money. The people who take that small amount are the ones who most likely have little to no knowledge about your work. In the long run, you lose profit for being cheap (Paul).

There are so many different ways you can lose money due to Crowdsourcing but a huge
one is lawsuits. An investor can lose the patience because you aren’t making the money you promised you would be making. They have a right to sue a business due to failure and that is a big way for you to lose even more money than you already have for failing (Arora).

Other people would argue about the validity of the data collected. Marcia Yudkin, owner of
a marketing solutions website and a marketing mentor, states that participants would more or
less state whatever comes to them off the top of their heads. The participants don’t necessarily have to know a thing about your company or what you’re even working on. Sometimes, they even ignore your criteria and just give you information on what they feel is right (Yudkin).

Based on the data you received, it can shoot you towards the other direction of what you
intentionally wanted. For example, you may have a project that has to do with growing plants that will help with cleaning our air. Another person will provide you with information like how to grow a plant that will supposedly make our air fresh. Once you believe this person and build on what they say, the end result will have nothing to do with what you were even trying to accomplish.  By recieving false data and believing it to be true, it can lead to the downfall of your project and later your company (“Pitfalls”).

Another disadvantage to Crowdsourcing is your marketing place. Depending on where
you put out your business plans, people can tarnish your product or your company. Angry
customers or investors can put out negative reviews leading to other customers or investors to not want your product (Floren).

When you put your business on a site like kickstarter, for example, it does not guarantee
the success of your company. Not all of the ideas pitched there are blown up into something bigger. Only 10 percent of all the business projects put up actually succeed (“Plunder”). There are a few marketing places that have huge hidden disadvantages you don't really think about until its too late. Indiegogo will take a huge percent of your final fund if you don't reach the goal you intended to meet. Fundables monthly fees will soon add up if you you campaign. Depending on the amount you raised for your business. CircleUp will take a percentage of all the money earned (MarketingMoxie).
As you can see, marketplace can mean everything to your business. It can determine whether you succeed or you fail.

This week went by pretty quick. Its probably because of the two days we got to miss for school. Which was great because no one was ready to go back too school after spring break. This weekend I helped my aunt at church. They flew this couple in from Florida to sing for their church and they had a fundraiser to earn money for their tickets. They held like an international food day and my aunt had Puerto Rico. We had loads of great foods. Everyone else had great food too. That was basically my week. It was pretty boring.

I have had a pretty amazing week. It did go by pretty slow and that was agonizing but, it was well worth it. My weekend was super slow and i appreciate that very much. My older sister invited me to go with her and her daughter to see sesame street live. Let me just say that was a freaking blast. I thought it would be lame but it was funny and fun. I had a great time with my niece and i could tell this was a huge moment for her getting to see elmo up on stage. That was basically the highlight of my week.

Sunday, March 30, 2014

3/30

My week seemed to drag on but it also seemed to go by quickly. I was babysitting my niece most of the week which was fun at first. Then she started going crazy and got extremely hyper. She was jumping on beds and doing summer saults, spilling her juice everywhere and screaming like a maniac. It was getting pretty hectic. That's all I basically did this week. Nothing to interesting going on in my life. Oh, I did however go out to eat with my niece and older sister. We went to panda express which is the most delicious Chinese place to eat. At least that's my personal opinion.

Sunday, March 23, 2014

3/23

This week was probably one of the quickest weeks we have had all school year. It was an amazing feeling. I hope the rest of the week’s go by as quick as this one. Spring break is coming soon and I am definitely looking forward to that. This weekend went by a bit slower which I appreciated. All I did was hangout with my older “sister.” She really isn’t blood related but I have known her ever since I moved to Chicago. We had a sleepover with her daughter, my niece, which is only two years old. We went to the mall and had cupcakes at an awesome cupcake shop.

Sunday, March 16, 2014

3/16

This week went by super fast. I am so excited that it went by so quick. I am already tired of school. Its the same routine every day. I am even more excited at the fact that school will be over in about two and a half months. This weekend i went to my friend Bebe's birthday party. It wasn't really a party, more like a lunch with a couple of friends. It was still fun and i got to meet some of her friends from lane and loyola high school. We ate Vietnamese food and let me say, it was delicious. I played it on the safe side and had beef with jalapenos.

Sunday, March 9, 2014

3/9

My weekly review is going to seriously suck this time. My week has been super freaking boring and all I did was homework. I'm tired of all the homework we get. What I really want is to enjoy some sleep. Instead of homework we should be assigned some sleep. This weekend I didn't really do much. My family and I went out to eat. We visited my grandfather but that's really all that I did. Oh, I also did a ton of homework. Yay me. I guess that's all for my review. Nothing much to really say. Bye world. Until next week.

Sunday, March 2, 2014

3/2

This week was not like every other week. I went to school on Monday a bit under the weather. As soon as soon as I got home, I felt even worse. I was extremely tired and started to develop a fever. I didn’t attend school the follow day which was Tuesday. My dad took care of me but it seemed to just get worse instead of better. That night my ear was throbbing and my dad wanted to take me to the hospital. I said no but I ended up going on Wednesday because I couldn’t sleep since my ear was hurting so bad. The doctor ended up saying I had a bad ear infection and I got antibiotics. I still had to go to school the follow day which sucked.

Weekly Review 2/23

This week was pretty awesome. It went by super quick and I loved that. Over the weekend, my parents took my younger sister and I on a big shopping spree. It was the most fun I have had this month and it was a great way to spend time as a family. We shopped for about 6 hours and I was still not done getting everything I needed. Nonetheless, I got a sufficient amount of clothes to last me a very long time. That was basically the highlight of my week. I did finish up Sunday morning which took another three hours but it was well worth it.

Monday, February 17, 2014

Weekly Review 2/16

My week was pretty busy and unusual. My dad had a surgery on Thursday that I had to attend with him. He was really nervous and I'm glad I'm the one who got to be there for him. My mom was at work and my other family members were also busy. It was a short surgery but I had to miss school. Then on Friday it was focus on us day and I guess that was cool. The only unusual part of my week was the surgery and my weekend. I guess I'm done. That was my week.

Saturday, February 8, 2014

Weekly review 2/9

For this week I really don't have much too say. It was a really long and boring week for me like it usually is. On Monday I didn't do much except swim and I started to get sick. Tuesday I was feeling even worse, but my dad didn't believe me. Wednesday I missed school due to the weather and thursday i got a fever. Friday i missed my morning classes so now i feel better. I have a party to attend and that's basically my week.

Sunday, February 2, 2014

Weekly review 2/2

This week was a really short week due to the horrible weather and snow. I was so happy we didn’t have to go to school. We missed two days, which sadly we need to make up some time during the year. This weekend I made tons and tons of bows. It took a really long time and I am still not done as of this moment. My family is having a super bowl party which I really don’t feel like going too but will attend for the free food. That’s about it for my week. Nothing else to say right now.

Weekly review 1/26

This week was finals week. It was just a long and painful week. I studied my butt off for every class and yet I managed to fail world and chemistry. I’m pretty ticked off about it but there is nothing I can really do except try harder this semester. This week I also started vinting. Vinting is basically selling my brand new and slightly used clothes to earn a little extra money. I downloaded the app vented and so far it’s going okay. I have to play the waiting game and see where this takes me. All in all, this week was decent.

Weekly review 1/19

This week wasn't as productive. During school, my teachers helped us prepare for our finals which are very rigorous. I did miss school on Friday since I felt extremely exhausted and my father let my stay home to get rest. My parents took my sister and I out to eat at Old Country Buffet. We hadn't been there in forever so it was nice to spend family time together at a place we all love.  On Saturday I helped my mother go grocery shopping. She is pregnant so if I didn't go with her, she wouldn't be able to carry all the weight of the groceries.

Weekly Review 1/12

This week was a pretty okay week. On Monday school was cancelled due to the extremely cold weather. It was 50 below zero and it was too cold to even stand outside. On Tuesday, school was also closed down since it was still way too cold for kids to go to school. My dad took my sister and I to go see Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones. It was a HORRIBLE movie. I mean horrible. The reviews on that movie are all crap. Don’t go see it. It’s not worth your time and money. The rest of the week I went to school. So yeah.

Weekly review 1/5

This week I really did not do much. It was new years and my family and I threw a party. It was fun. My family taught me how to play poker. I really sucked at first, but I got better throughout the game. My dad took my sister, her friend, and I sledding. We went down the hill only twice before my sister started complaining about wanting to go ice skating. My sister convinced my dad to take us and also convinced her friend to skate. Her friend didn't know how to skate so I ended up taking her place and we only skated for half an hour before it was too cold to go around anymore.
